Mitch Nick’s Picks

What’s up everyone? If you’re a fan of good, maybe even interesting, hip hop then you’ve come to the right place. I want to share some of the best, in my opinion, underground rap albums and hip hop projects in general. So, on this page, feel free to peruse the different posts I’ve made for something new. I truly hope you can find something you’ll enjoy listening to or even a reminder to bump something you haven’t heard in awhile. I started Mitch Nick’s Picks awhile ago on Reddit in order to share some of the underground rap albums I’ve been listening to. I really believe that playing an album front to back is one of the best ways to listen to music and I want to help people shift away from the catchy loop that only lasts two minutes so you play it again and appeal to the algorithm. Music should take you somewhere and when it ends, take you back to where you started slightly different. There are plenty of people who diverge from the mainstream, those quick and catchy singles, and strive to bring you something truly unique. Much of that lies in underground rap albums. This is also a quest of my own, to discover a new music and share it with you. It won’t cover much brand new, breaking material as I let time be a natural filter so I hope you are ready and willing to look back on what has come before but has still impacted the culture in subtle ways. Anyway, without further ado, here are some of my favorite underground rap albums and hip hop projects – new and old, big and small.

Start Finish Repeat – Paul Wall & Termanology (Album 2023) [Mitch Nick’s Picks]

This week I want to get into a fairly recent album which I have been bumping here and there for over a year now. That is – Start Finish Repeat from Paul Wall and Termanology. I have probably tuned...

Soundpieces: Da Antidote – Lootpack (Album 1999) [Mitch Nick’s Picks]

Soundpieces: Da Antidote is an essential album for any underground hip hop fan and I would say is one of the cornerstones of underground hip hop. When it was released in 1999, hip-hop music was the...

Lyricists Lounge Vol. 1 (1998) [Mitch Nick’s Picks]

I stumbled upon this project through Body Rock from Mos Def, Q-Tip and Tash a few years ago when I searched for it and noticed, admittedly for the first time, the album it was a part of. Since then, I...

“Seared Foie Gras with Quince and Cranberry” Asher Roth (2010 Mixtape) [Mitch Nick’s Pick]

This week I wanted to share one of my favorite pieces of hip-hop: “Seared Foie Gras with Quince and Cranberry” by Asher Roth. This is a mixtape I stumbled on when it was released on Datpiff in 2010...

“Make Way for the W” – The Whooliganz (Proposed Album 1993) [Mitch Nick Pick’s]

I want to stay in the same era as last week and share something I am sure not a lot of people have heard of. We all know The Alchemist and the massive amount of high-quality work he has done in...

“Reel to Reel” – Grand Puba (1992) [Mitch Nick’s Picks]

This week I want to go back to my favorite era in hip-hop and follow up last week’s write-up with Grand Puba’s album “Reel to Reel” which came out in 1992. Grand Puba came up in New Rochelle...

“Masters of the Universe” – Binary Star (2000 Album) [Mitch Nick’s Picks]

*This post from 2023 got a “Quality Post” flag on Reddit* I’m going back a little farther this week to the turn of the millennia when Binary Star, a group which consisted of Senim Silla...

“State of the Arts” – Afu-Ra (2005) [Mitch Nick’s Picks]

This week I’m swinging back to the 2000’s and picking Afu-Ra’s album “State of the Arts”. Oddly enough, I was first introduced to Afu-Ra while working in a hostel in Budapest over six years ago now...

“UNDER8ED” – Pardison Fontaine (2019) [Mitch Nick’s Picks]

I’m switching it up quite a bit this week and sharing Pardison Fontaine’s album “UNDER8ED”. People who know me would be quite surprised with this pick as I’ve been guilty of almost religiously...
